Longtime patrons and newcomers alike enter the weekend with a zeal, having no clear sense of what's to come. The air, full of ranch dust, is still Indian-Summer hot, though participant's costume masks, furs, onezies, and festive scarves, tell otherwise. The zest & overall participation far outweighs that of a typical music festival. Spectators and competitors alike are ready for a weekend of the unexpected, for drinks that start early & end late, for camaraderie, disappointment, and triumph.
Welcome to 24 Hours of Horseshoe Hell. Each September it hosts both a 12-hour & 24-hour climbing marathon. Early Friday morning, founder Andy Chasteen, stands before this year's cheering competitors just before releasing them to the canyon's walls. Playfully chastising them-- he announces that, in case they haven't already realized, they're f***ing crazy.
The Arkansas based competition has drawn people in from from around the world since 2008. Greats like Alex Honnold & Tommy Caldwell have taken the 24 hours on. Held at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch, this festival has become a definite piece in defining the Natural State as an epic climbing destination. The comp will celebrate its tenth consecutive year during their September 2018 competition. For more info on 24HHH or how you can register to compete visit their website.
